Our History

Founded in 1948, the Beta Chapter of Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. has proudly served the Greater Hartford community for more than seventy-five years. Built on the guiding principles of sisterhood, scholarship, and service, Beta Chapter has dedicated its efforts to educational empowerment, professional development, and civic responsibility.

From its earliest years, Beta Chapter has invested in the future of young people through scholarships, mentorship, and leadership programs. Over the decades, the chapter has awarded more than $80,000 in scholarships to local students pursuing higher education and has sponsored the Future Iota Leaders (FILS) program to prepare youth for success in academics, leadership, and community engagement.

Beta Chapter also celebrates and uplifts the achievements of others through signature events such as the Apple for the Teacher Luncheon, which honors outstanding educators, and the Business and Emerging Entrepreneur Month celebrations, which spotlight professional women and entrepreneurs. These programs, along with service initiatives for Breast Cancer Awareness, MLK Day of Service, Back-to-School Drives, and Holiday Senior Celebrations, demonstrate the chapter’s commitment to meeting community needs year-round.

As part of the Eastern Region of Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc., Beta Chapter collaborates with sister chapters and civic partners — including the NAACP, Urban League, and other community organizations — expanding its impact through service and advocacy. Throughout its history, the chapter has also been supported by Pelatis and the Men of Iota, who contribute to events, fundraising, and outreach efforts.

Today, Beta Chapter remains dedicated to carrying forward the mission of Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. — fostering education, leadership, and civic engagement while creating opportunities for growth and success for generations to come.
